FIRST VICE PRESIDENTS
MESSAGE
Dear Brothers and Sisters of Local 513
First of all, I would like to thank the membership for
giving me the privilege of serving as your 1st Vice-President
for the past nine years.Lately, I have received a couple
of calls on eligibility and running for union office.
Some of our brothers (and this is a small number) think
that the executive board should waive the by-laws and
make everyone eligible to run for union office. I hope
the ones who consider running for union office know that
if elected, come January 1, 2008 they would be sworn to
their new position, a position they will occupy for the
next three years. Now the first paragraph of the oath
of office begins with this, First we raise our right hand,
then I solemnly pledge on my honor to abide by the Constitution
of the transport workers of America and the rules and
by-laws of Local 513. Our by-laws were changed in 2005.
They went from fifty percent in a 34 month period, to
our current by-laws, of three meetings in a twelve month
period prior to nominations. A member who failed to attend
a general membership meeting can apply for attendance
credit (for a maximum of two (2) membership meeting credits)
in writing within fourteen (14) days after the meeting.
Also, in a twelve month period we have 88 meetings in
which you only have to attend ONE meeting with two board
credits. Now whoever is elected to union office, it is
your duty to uphold the by-laws and constitution of local
513. Every election there is a select few who petition
this local on waiving the eligibility to run for union
office. The reason the by-laws were waived in 2004, is
because we had a by-law change. A change to the eligibility
that would make it easier for all members to attain. Brothers
and Sisters ask this question to anyone who comes around
with their campaign.promises. If elected would you pledge
to uphold the by-laws and constitution? These are difficult
times we live in. It is easy for a leader to lead when
times are good, but the true test of a leader, is leading
when times are tough. God Bless Fraternally, Tony Noviello
1st Vice-President Local 513.
